We have teamed up with Moogfest to bring you an exclusive mix by Earthly, fresh off playing the festival. Earthly is Edaan and Brint from North Carolina. Their debut LP, Days (Noumenal Loom) LP, announced their arrival last year, earning praise for their imaginative, trippy sample work that they mold and paint into a strange kind of pure sonic expression.

Edaan and I met through Animal Collective, and though Earthly comes from another sonic planet, what’s similar to me is their evocation of childlike playfulness/freedom. Edaan works for Red Eye, runs the label Break World (Teengirl Fantasy, Elysia Crampton, Goth Money) and seems to treat all strains of music with equal seriousness. Thusly, this mix is an incredibly diverse and creative suite in rapid-fire succession, held together with thoughtful interludes and found sounds. Including several stops in Japan, classical composers like Satie to syruppy rap and ending it all on a spiritual note with Alice Coltrane, they manage to make it all work.

We asked Edaan and Brint a few qs about the mix and their process.

[ mp3: Juliana Huxtable – Weird Magic Mix: The Awakening ]

It was over three months ago that Juliana Huxtable began to cook this one up. Over a month in, the mix seemed like another lost promise, until we learned that Juliana had been touring and finished the first “movement” in transit. That’s when we knew we were dealing with something Heavy.

A giant beam of light in NYC’s queer and music scenes, Juliana brings us The Awakening, a journey that hits on everything and compromises nothing. Anyone in this generation will identify with the familiar faces that pop up, which include – spoiler alert – Madonna, Korn, Star Wars, Bone Thugs, and Dragon Ball, over a hyperactive and cunty bed of beats. Steeped to perfection, Bjork won’t be the only one dropping this at parties.

Some of the best selectors are pure sound travelers who would probably call themselves “historian” before “musician”. Max Pearl is a music documentarian by blood, from his own publications, including Cluster mag, to launching Thump/working with Vice to Resident Advisor (where we covered Sustain-Release). But he also will dj with a live conga player and drop killer mixes like this one, which effortlessly jumps around the globe calling on deep ethnic and club strains, as well as some killer footwork cuts, in a stew he describes as “hardcore”.

Max has been keeping busy in Mexico, we caught up with him to see what he’s up to, and get his predictions for 2015.

“This is probably our best, or our most personal mix yet… just because it’s our shit — that we touched.” DJ Mel Gibson and DBK come to the table with a fresh bag of exclusive/unreleased tracks and cook up one of the most inviting platters of footwork we’ve heard since Double Cup. DJ Rashad introduced us when he put them up during SXSW presenting them as peers, and you can feel the kinship in the music – they both have a tight grip on that comfortable zone between turnt-up and chilled-out, where you can dance or smoke. And when they recall his jazzier, more soulful side, like when the horn section peaks out on mix opener “All I Can Do”, I swear I can hear the ghost of Rashad.
“We sought out to kind of do [footwork] but not really copy it, to use that sound to guide you.” (Their penchant for soul and jazz samples probably owes just as much to Dilla, whom they close the mix with an edit of.) “All I Can Do” is distinctly their own, but then when Rashad/Spinn/Taso’s “Cream” VIP slips in sounding like a continuation of that same thought, it all kind of makes sense. Fittingly, then, their next appearance will also be alongside all of them on Hyperdub’s upcoming Teklife compilation, Next Life. They’ve also got two EPs in the oven, and you can get your first dibs on all that right here.

this mix by e&e for mawu-lisa is too good — jumping from ambient to r&b to gunshot beats, playing out like a romantic, apocalyptic film. his mix for dismagazine easily as alien/drug-like. my favorite part (aside from brandy over marimbas) is around 5:40 when the serenity gives way to some pretty bell chimes and then an abrasive burst of hyperspeed water toms. most people would probably ask you to change it immediately, but for a few of us weirdos, it’s pretty beautiful.

the track is by lisbent, who may be from portugal or denmark or both. his soundcloud is packed with tunes which may or may not have all been made in the past few months, left-field footwork tracks mixed with some musique concrete to mexican tribal rave for good measure. cool stuff.
